The McDonald’s Cups Size Myth

4.5/5 - (2 votes)

Did you hear that McDonald’s cups are all the same size? If you type “TikTok McDonald’s” into your search engine, all of the top hits point to a TikTok video recently posted by user @mykah.mykah. Mikah Neufeld, who posted a video of himself dressed very much like a McDonald’s employee (with a headset and polo shirt similar to what staffers wear)–but without any McDonald’s logos or branding.

TikTok Video Shows McDonald’s Cups Are All the Same

In the brief video, Neufeld pours soda from a small cup into a medium cup. Then, he pours the medium cup into a large cup. Each time, the soda cup looks filled nearly to the top. Neufeld claims that all three sizes of Mcdonald’s soda cups hold virtually the same amount of liquid. Several TikTok users also pointed out the key fact that every McDonald’s soda in the U.S., regardless of size, is sold for one dollar. So maybe they do contain the same amount of soda.

Since Neufeld posted, the video racked up over 11 million views, about 1.6 million likes, and several thousand comments. Many commenters expressed anger with McDonald’s in the comment section. But thousands of other viewers also refuted the video, claiming it was just an elaborate hoax.

It’s a Magic Trick

The cups are visibly different sizes. Many viewers pointed out that Neufeld must have filled a portion of the medium and large cups with liquid. This creates the illusion that each cup holds the same amount of liquid as a small. His video does not show the inside of the cups as empty. Current and former McDonald’s employees said the brand’s cups are clearly different sizes.
